Auckland Mayor Len Brown was last night bestowed the prestigious Taua’aletoa title of Lepa.

Presiding over the ceremony at the village malae last night, Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi – who also holds the orator title Fatialofa from Lepa – said the original Taua’aletoa was a famous warrior of the Lepa and Saleapaga district.

“It is then only worthy that you (Mayor Len Brown) be conferred this famous title as you have for many years been a warrior and a champion of our Samoan people in Auckland,” said Tuilaepa.

Mayor Taua’aletoa Len Brown said his title will be his physical connection to his many Samoan friends, Samoan mentors and the Samoan communities of Auckland.

“Growing up in Otara, I had – and still have – many Samoan, Pacific Island and some palagi friends. One of my most influential mentors was none other than the respected Tanuvasa Grey. A selfless man, he hammered into me the values of putting before your own personal and business interests, the interests of your family, your community and your people. Those have been life lessons and life values for me during my business and political career.”

Labour Member of Parliament Su’a William Sio – who is part of the large delegation Taua’aletoa brought to Samoa – thanked Tuilaepa and the village council of Lepa for bestowing the title on the Auckland mayor.

Taua’aletoa’s delegation return to New Zealand following a two-day round of business talks, site visits and courtesy calls on various government and NGO offices.
