No plans to change national flag

Contrary to overseas reports, government has no plans to change the national flag.

The issue was raised in a recent article by former Savali editor Michael Field, now with New Zealand’s Fairfax Media. Mr Field wrote that replacing the national flag was the Samoan government’s “next big change”.

This was dismissed this week by Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi.

“That is absurd. Our flag is the most beautiful of all national flags I’ve seen. At conferences overseas  I’ve attended, the colours of our flag certainly stand out. They are simple and eye-catching.”

The Prime Minister said the notion to change the flag was actually raised by a Parliament Opposition member some months ago as, the member claimed, the national flag and colours were a colonial remnant.

“I was the one who actually stood up and defended the national flag.”

He added;

“Government does not make changes for the sake of changing. It makes changes that will improve people’s lives. I see no benefit whatsoever to our country if we changed our national flag.”
